MY LORD WILL COME

Words and music by Neil Maxey (ASCAP)

1. On a coming day, though I know not when,
Oh, my Lord will come, my Lord will come;
And His chosen ones He will gather in,
Oh, my Lord will come one day!

2. With the trumpet call He will soon appear,
Oh, my Lord will come;
When we hear that sound we will know He's near,
Oh, my Lord will come one day!

Will you be ready, will you be ready when He will come that day?
Will you be ready, will you be ready when He will come that day?

3. Will you be prepared for that glorious day,
Oh, my Lord will come, my Lord will come;
'Til that time arrives, will you watch and pray?
Oh, my Lord will come one day!

Will you be ready, will you be ready when He will come that day?
Will you be ready, will you be ready when He will come that day?

4. When at last He comes in the clouds of white,
Oh, my Lord will come, my Lord will come;
We shall all see Him, what a glorious sight,
Oh, my Lord will come one day!
My Lord will come one day!

A LOOK BEHIND THE MUSIC

One Sunday morning back in 1988, my good friend and mentor Rev. Sydney Langston Goldfinch preached a sermon based on Matthew 24:36-44. "Watch out, because you do not know what day your Lord will come." The sermon focused on how the Lord comes to us in the present as well as the future. I began to understand this passage in a new deeper way. The next day while sitting at the piano, this song formed in my mind and heart. Rarely have the words, music, and arrangement come so quickly or so completely. I finished the manuscript in a couple of days and it was performed for the first time by the Sanctuary Choir of First Baptist Church, Walnut Cove, NC in Rev. Goldfinch's honor. My friend has since passed away, but his love and example live on in the lives of all he touched here in the US and in Uraguay, Paraguay, and Costa Rica where he served many years as a missionary.

"My Lord Will Come" was first published in 1991.
